ABB Switchgear Financing
Arc-resistant switchgear commands a price premium for a reason. An ABB SafeGear lineup specified for a petrochemical plant, a water treatment facility, or a mining operation is not a commodity purchase. It is an engineered assembly that often costs more than an entire project's worth of other equipment. Financing that can handle that scale without requiring the buyer to clean out working capital is what we do.
We finance ABB switchgear including the SafeGear arc-resistant platform, the UniGear medium-voltage lineup, and the Relion protective relay series. Our minimum is $50,000 and most ABB medium-voltage transactions run well above $100,000. Larger assemblies, particularly SafeGear lineups for industrial or utility applications, routinely reach six to seven figures.
Application-only review is available up to roughly $400,000. Larger ABB deals require three months of bank statements and, above $1 million, business financials. Funding runs one to two weeks from application for standard transactions.
ABB Equipment We Finance
The ABB product lines we most often see in financing requests:
- SafeGear Arc-resistant SwitchgearABB's arc-resistant medium-voltage switchgear rated up to 38kV, designed to contain arc flash energy and protect personnel in the event of an internal arc. Required on many industrial, utility, and process facility projects where the specification explicitly calls for arc-resistant construction per IEEE C37.20.7 test protocols.
- UniGear Medium-voltage SwitchgearMetalclad and metal-enclosed vacuum switchgear for primary and secondary distribution from 7.2kV to 24kV. Used in utility applications, large commercial complexes, and industrial primary distribution where a well-proven medium-voltage platform is specified.
- Relion Protective Relay SeriesIED-based digital protection and control relays that ship with switchgear assemblies or as standalone protection upgrades. The Relion 615, 620, and 670 series cover feeder, transformer, motor, and generator protection applications.
- SACE Emax2 And Tmax Low-voltage BreakersABB's LV power circuit breaker and molded-case breaker families, often bundled with switchboard or distribution panel packages.
Complete ABB primary distribution packages that combine switchgear, protection relays, and downstream distribution can be structured as a single financing transaction.
Where ABB Equipment Is Specified
ABB's arc-resistant and medium-voltage gear shows up most often in sectors where personnel safety standards are highest and downtime costs are severe.
Oil, gas, and petrochemical plants frequently specify SafeGear for primary and secondary distribution in hazardous locations. Arc-resistant construction is not optional on many petrochemical applications where a breaker fault could become a facility incident.
Mining and materials operations carry ABB gear in surface and underground installations where the combination of high fault current levels and limited access makes arc-resistant construction standard practice. ABB has a long history serving heavy industrial mining applications globally.
Water and wastewater treatment facilities run ABB MCCs and switchgear in pump station and treatment plant electrical rooms where the combination of continuous operation and wet environments raises the safety stakes.
Utility and renewable energy developers also spec ABB UniGear and GIS gear for substation and interconnect applications where the manufacturer's global service network is part of the value proposition.
Credit, Documents, And Timeline
ABB's higher-value assemblies mean the credit review is more detailed on large transactions, but the process is not slow. For transactions under $400,000, an application-only process is standard. Above that, three months of bank statements plus a two-page application handles most mid-range deals.
B and C credit profiles are reviewed case by case. The asset value on ABB arc-resistant switchgear is real, and the equipment is not easily commoditized, which means it holds value as collateral. A business with some credit blemishes can sometimes close on ABB gear that a weaker-collateral transaction could not support.
We do not require real estate collateral. The switchgear is the asset. On large industrial projects, the credit case often rests heavily on the operator's history, cash flow, and the specific application of the gear rather than on a personal credit score.
challenged-credit switchgear financing is available for ABB transactions where credit is a challenge. We also offer application-only financing on smaller ABB packages where the credit profile supports it.
New Vs. Surplus ABB Gear
ABB's installed base is large, and surplus gear moves through specialty electrical distributors after plant shutdowns, utility upgrades, and industrial reconfigurations. Surplus ABB UniGear and SafeGear that has been tested and reconditioned can be financed. The key questions are age, fault rating compatibility with the application, and whether parts support is available from ABB or the refurbisher.
For arc-resistant switchgear purchases in particular, the certification of arc resistance to the specific test protocol matters. Used gear that has been modified may not carry the original arc-resistant certification, which is worth verifying before the spec locks in.
New ABB gear typically has a 12 to 20-plus week factory lead time depending on configuration. Progress and deposit financing handles deposit and delivery draw schedules so you are not waiting on capital while the gear is being built.

Review Switchgear TermsCommon Questions on ABB Switchgear Financing
Straight answers before you send the equipment file.
ABB SafeGear can cost over a million dollars for a full lineup. Is there a maximum transaction size you handle?
We do not publish a hard cap. Large transactions above $1 million require business financials alongside the application and bank statements, and the credit review is more detailed. We have structured multi-million-dollar ABB transactions and can discuss the approach for larger projects.
Can I finance ABB Relion protective relays as standalone items, separate from the switchgear assembly?
Yes. Relion relays can be financed as standalone purchases if the dollar amount is above our $50,000 minimum. A relay upgrade project or a protection modernization program that replaces electromechanical relays with Relion IEDs across a facility can be structured as a single financing transaction.
Our arc-resistant switchgear spec requires ABB SafeGear specifically. Does the financing process treat arc-resistant gear differently?
The financing structure is the same. The main practical difference is that arc-resistant switchgear typically costs more per assembly than standard gear, so the transaction size is larger. We verify the asset as arc-resistant construction when reviewing the specification, which confirms the collateral value.
Can I finance a full ABB primary distribution system including switchgear, protection relays, and downstream panels as one deal?
Yes. A complete ABB primary distribution package can be wrapped into a single financing transaction. This covers the medium-voltage switchgear, the protection relay assemblies, downstream LV switchboards or panels, and any associated control panels specified in the same purchase order.
We want to refinance ABB switchgear we bought three years ago at a higher rate. Is that possible?
Equipment refinancing on installed ABB gear is available. If the gear has remaining useful life and the outstanding balance supports a new transaction, we can structure a refinance. In some cases there is also cash-out equity available if the asset has been partially paid down and current market value supports a larger balance.
